CSMM wins the iF DESIGN AWARD for its publication RE:BUILD THE FUTURE

Munich, March 5, 2025 – CSMM, an international architecture and consulting firm known for its award-winning designs, has received a prestigious new accolade—this time for a publication. The firm triumphed over numerous global entries to win the iF DESIGN AWARD for its bookazine entitled RE:BUILD THE FUTURE. While CSMM has already garnered countless accolades for its architecture and workplace designs, this award underscores the firm’s multi-faceted creative vision, extending beyond the built environment itself.

With this award-winning publication, CSMM puts the spotlight on future-proof design solutions and challenges architects to become responsible stewards of our built heritage in the face of climate change. RE:BUILD THE FUTURE is the second edition of the bookazine series, which—just like the first edition entitled CHANGE IS CHANCE—received the prestigious ADC Award from the Art Directors Club. The publication brings together essays, feature articles and interviews in a ground-breaking exploration of the intersection between society and architecture.

CSMM Managing Partner Timo Brehme explains: “Our bookazine series engages with the issues that inspire us as architects, but also what drives our society and our clients—placing them in a broader context. Through these publications, we aim to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and highlight the role of architecture as a catalyst for social change.”

The bookazine as a platform for social discourse

The idea for the publication came from Carmen Vierbacher, who worked with Nina Eisenbrand to develop the concept and the content of the bookazine. As Head of Communication Design und Head of Corporate Communications, respectively, they guided the project from idea to implementation.

“Architecture is more than just constructing buildings—it is about dialogue, reflection and taking a stance. As an editorial designer, I knew from the start that a periodical publication would be the perfect platform to bring this discourse to the public in a way our own website alone could never achieve,” says Carmen Vierbacher. “It was the dedication and the collaboration of our team that brought this concept to life, resulting in a well-crafted and thoughtfully designed format

We have honed our vision over time and are now proud to release a new bookazine every two years—one that is as compelling in content as it is in design.” Nina Eisenbrand adds: “Our creative process begins with an in-depth exploration of the issues that drive us and the design projects we support—but it is the exchange of ideas within our team that truly elevates it to new heights. Curating the content, refining it in-house and enriching it with outside perspectives before finally bringing it to life in book form is an incredibly rewarding experience. This project goes far beyond traditional PR; it has become a dynamic, multi-layered collaboration. We see the finished product as a true milestone our firm’s work.”

A reflection of the times: design and content

The principles of renewal and revitalisation expressed in CSMM’s title RE:BUILD THE FUTURE are also evident in the look and feel of the bookazine. Much in the same way the firm breathes new life into legacy buildings with its architectural designs, that same spirit inspired the publication’s design:

  • The classic open-spine binding looks almost “naked”, symbolising the shell, the embodied energy of a building.
  • The reflective cover and its zeitgeist flair—much like an innovative façade design—stands out from, but also complements, the original bare-bones structure with contrasting colours and materials.

As an allegory of architecture, both the content and the design of the bookazine celebrate the beauty of the past and honour its enduring qualities, while also taking those ideas forward into a sustainable, vibrant and modern future—an ideal marriage of old and new.

The iF DESIGN AWARD: international recognition for outstanding design

The award recognises both the exceptional design of the bookazine and its thoughtful content, which reflects CSMM’s commitment to fostering social discourse on architecture and sustainability. The iF DESIGN AWARD is one of the world’s most prestigious design honours, with nearly 11,000 submissions from 66 countries competing in 2025. This year, the jury placed special emphasis on sustainability as one of the five key judging criteria.
